Twenty minutes of play together can be the best part of the day. The problem is almost never the time: it's not knowing what to play.
Sitting on the floor with a three-year-old and having no idea what to do is an awkward moment that almost nobody admits to. And it always ends the same way: five minutes in, someone picks up their phone.
These are the toys we chose precisely because the adult stays too.
Three specific games for this afternoon
The stopwatch challenge — with Cascada
“Let's see who can make the marble take longest to come down.” You each build your own run, you time them, and whoever loses builds the next one. Works from 4 years and hooks any adult.
Copy my tower — with Guijarros
You build a tower of four stones, they copy it. Then the other way round, and you have to copy theirs. It's visual memory, attention and turn-taking, dressed up as a silly game.
Colour hunt — with Prisma
With a torch in the dark: you cast a colour on the wall and they have to find something in the room that matches. From two and a half years.
Three rules that make it work
- Phone in another room. Not on silent, in another room. It's the difference between twenty minutes and twenty real minutes.
- Don't correct. If the tower is badly built, it falls on its own and they learn. Your job is to play, not to teach.
- Stop before they get tired. What gets cut short at its best is what's remembered.
